If you mention “horror host” to someone randomly on the street more than likely the response will be Elvira. If you mention “horror host” to a fan chances are you will get a whole list of classic characters, including Vampira, Zacherley, Svengoolie, Morgus The Magnificent, The Ghoul, Sir Graves Ghastley, Dr. Paul Bearer, Ghoulardi and many, many others. Even names like Bob Wilkins and John Stanley may be mentioned. Though many of these hosts have come and gone, one is still going strong in the Washington, DC area. His name is Count Gore DeVol.

Count Gore made his debut in 1973 on WDCA with his show Creature Feature. Dick Dyszel, the man behind the makeup, also played Bozo The Clown in the morning and Captain 20, a Spock-like character, who would host cartoons in the afternoon. Initially Creature Feature ran from 1973 until 1979. Then, through persistance, he was able to revive it for a 2nd run from 1984-1987. By this time, WDCA was doing what most stations around the country were doing…cutting costs and getting rid of locally produced shows. Since then, the Count has reappeared online with his own weekly internet-based web cast, being the first horror host in history to do this! You can check out his show here.

I myself didn’t become aware of the Count until just a few years ago when someone sent me copies of his show. I was immediately drawn to the Count’s character and loved his innocence and charm. He was someone who tried so very hard to succeed but just couldn’t seem to catch a break, especially with the ladies.  The show oftentimes seemed ad-libbed which made the show more fun and it seemed to flow more naturally. He wasn’t afraid to make fun of himself and if something went wrong it was common for the footage to be left in and there were times you would see the Count start laughing. Even though he was usually showing the cheesiest of the b-grade monster flicks, he always managed to give them a degree of respectability. Because of his love of the movies, as well as his love for the Count, Dick Dyszel created a show that is often imitated but never duplicated.

To show how loved and respected Count Gore DeVol is, one only needs to look as far as his fellow horror hosts. There was a time when hosts were very territorial and possessive of their characters and shows. Now, thanks in part to the Count and the Horror Host Underground, these hosts are helping each other by promoting each others’ shows and even making guest appearances on each others’ programs. It certainly is a great time to be a fan of horror hosts! I spoke with a few hosts, all of which were more than willing to contribute to this piece with their thoughts on the good Count. This is what they had to say…

Count Gore De Vol represents everything good about the horror host. He was part of the heyday of the hosts in the past and was responsible for bringing the hosts back to the spotlight in recent years when he was the first to have a weekly show online. He loves his fans as much as they love him and even after all these years he is as warm and friendly as ever. He has affected more peoples lives than he will ever know and I am grateful that he continues to do that voodoo that he do so well.” – Ormon Grimsby, host of Monster Creature Feature

Count Gore is the Grandfather of the Internet Horror Host. Tales From The Graveyard Shift owes its start on the internet to Count Gore!” – Dr. Pureblood, host of Tales From The Graveyard Shift

When I began tinkering with the notion of doing this hosting thing, I was searching for movie sites on-line and the first hosted one I came across was Count Gore DeVol’s. Seeing a real horror host doing his thing on the net gave me the motivation to go ahead with my planned project of doing an internet based show of my own. My top-hat is off to the count for being such a pioneer! It’s truly amazing that he began doing internet stuff in 98. Especially when you consider how “new” the whole internet idea was to all of us at that time!” – Sigmund Zoid, host of Alternative Realities TV

I consider myself very lucky to have “grown up” during the 1970’s…having a TV host like Captain 20, and Count Gore De Vol, to educate and entertain. The influence of Dick Dyszel’s marvelous characters, reached almost a million kids in the DC area at the time, and it’s something that made television really special. You had to “be there” to watch it, there were no repeats, you couldn’t buy a tape, and there was nowhere else it could be seen. Kids were literally glued to their TV sets every afternoon for Captain 20 and Saturday nights for Count Gore. The fact that he is STILL doing his act on the web, is such a great thing for me, and all the people who grew up watching, as well as the people all over the world, who now get to literally “be involved” in the show, thru the internet on Creature Feature: the veekly veb program !!!!…Long may the Count continue to creaturize the country !!!!!!!!!” - Karlos Borloff, host of Monster Madhouse

The man sucks blood–but oozes charm. People who’ve never even seen his show are drawn to him and the ladies fall down at his feet like a sack of wet phone books. Mr. Lobo sees him in action and thinks about possibly trying on some make-up and a cape…” – Mr. Lobo, host of Cinema Insomnia

To me, Count Gore De Vol represents the ancient… er, classic Seventies era approach to Horror Hosting, and is the genuine relic… um, article, and a great deal of fun to watch, even if he is one of the 3 worst Horror Hosts in the history of the genre. Seriously, I have a great deal of respect for the man, no matter what goes on in his hotel rooms at these conventions with all of those underage Campfire Girls. And, his camera operator’s smokin’ hot!” – The Bone Jangler, host of The Bone Jangler’s Daytime Dungeon

The word “legend” is tossed around a lot in the entertainment world. Well, Count Gore honestly and truly is a TV legend. While his talent, skill and professionalism absolutely play a large part in his status as a Horror Host icon, that isn’t all there is to it. You see, Count Gore is also a great guy – as in friendly, down-to-earth and approachable. A lot of people in the entertainment world would do well to take their cues from the Count. I am honored to call him a friend.” – Penny Dreadful, host of Shilling Shockers

I met Count Gore DeVol at the National Haunters Convention over the summer. It was my first official outing as a brand-new horror host and Count Gore DeVol was just wonderful and charismatic! If only I had any more money left I would have wanted to walk away with one of everything at his table. Count Gore DeVol is an inspiring influence for both aspiring actors and horror hosts.” – Roxsy Tyler, host of Roxsy Tyler’s Carnival Of Horrors

I have met Count Gore once and He is a true gentleman. He deserves a ton of respect not only for his many years on television but the fact that he gave birth to the whole “internet Horrorhost” genre with his website… a true visionary.” – Marlena Midnight, host of Midnight Mausoleum

Count Gore DeVol is an original. He pioneered the web movement. CGDV is one classy sucker!” – Ms. Monster, host of Hel On Ice

Count Gore DeVol is a true pioneer of the horror hosting genre! He has endured the test of time! He started out on TV in the ’70s then made the venture online in the ’90s to be the first Internet horror host! He is a real inspiration to me! I’ve met Count Gore at several conventions and he has alvays been very gracious and supportive tovards me. I had the opportunity to interview The Count at the recent HorrorHound Weekend Convention in Indy and learned even more insight about his background. Recently, a documentary vas made about his long career that included his other notable characters Captain 20 and Bozo! Gore is simply one amazing talent and a Cool Ghoul!” – Count Sam Gregula, host of Count Gregula’s Crypt

36943_440375969739_292612174739_5864943_3738201_n

I truly, truly admire the man. He’s been the most supportive individual in the world as a friend, and a true professional in all my horror host efforts! I mean, he could be using all of his energy to promote his own show, for chrissakes, but he’s taken time to help me with Spooky Movie Television as well. He still has no idea how hard it is not to to have a fanboy moment and go, “YOU’RE MY HERO! Ohmuhgod!” I never want to say, “I grew up watching you!” I don’t want to date either of ourselves! HAHAHAH!” - John “Doctor Sarcofiguy” Dimes, Spooky Movie Television, and author of “There Are No Bad Movies! (Only Bad Audiences)”

Over the last few years there have been a few horror host documentaries released, like AMERICAN SCARY and VIRGINIA CREEPERS. Though both are highly recommended only one was released dealing solely with the man of the hour, Count Gore DeVol. In mid 2010 the Count Gore documentary EVERY OTHER DAY IS HALLOWEEN was released on BrinkDVD. Needless to say, this much anticipated release did not disappoint and it is highly recommended for any horror host library. It was actually seeing this DVD that prompted me to write this piece! If you don’t have a copy you can order one by clicking on the image of the cover artwork below.

And now…what you have all been waiting for! My interview with Count Gore DeVol!!!

ME: Were you a fan of monster movies growing up? If so, what are some of your favorites?

COUNT GORE: I liked scary movies, some with monsters, some without. I grew up in the 50’s so I got to watch a lot of big bug films….atomic radiation was all the rage. I also liked films about outer space, most of which had monsters included at no extra charge.

ME: Did you have a favorite horror host growing up? If so, who?

COUNT GORE: I watched “Shock Theater” with Marvin on Channel 7 in Chicago. He was a beatnik with thick glasses and a tall, curvy wife whose face we never saw.

count-gore

ME: What made you decide to be a horror host?

COUNT GORE: Too much beer. The general manager of the station, another co-worker and myself were watching a bunch of demo movie open packages very late one night after way too many beers. An open for a horror showcase came up and I yelled in my best Transylvanian accent, “That’s what we need, a horror host!” The GM turn around and said, “You’re hired!” the rest, as they say is history.

ME: What were your inspirations for the character of Count Gore De Vol?

COUNT GORE: Once it became obvious that the GM was serious, I looked to my closet to define the character. I had a tux, a cape (this was the 70’s) and could roll my Rs with the best of them. So I decided on a vampire. Besides, it gave me an excuse to bite the necks of pretty young girls (this was still the 70’s)!

ME: You are obviously very supportive of other horror hosts in that you have them on your show all of the time. Who are some of your favorites today and why?

COUNT GORE: Yes, in this global environment, there’s enough room for everyone who wants to be a host and the only way to find out if you are any good is to work at it and let the public decided. Once the Internet came about, I met and became friends with such hosts as A. Ghastlee Ghoul, The Bone Jangler, Laslo, Butch Cleaver, The Son of Ghoul, Karlos Borloff, Dr. Sarcofiguy, Mr. Lobo and Penny Dreadful, to name just a few. I really like to hang with them because they are so talented….and I hope some it rubs off!

count-gore-devol

ME: You have taken your show CREATURE FEATURE into an all new direction by having it online. Would you ever want to go back to network television?

COUNT GORE: My general response to that question is, “Why would I want to do that? I now have the whole world as an audience. Why would I want to go back to just one market?” The answer that I rarely give is, “For money!!!” The Internet is a great place but few people make a living by offering entertainment. So, if a station or network made me an offer I couldn’t refuse…I wouldn’t!”

ME: I loved the documentary of you EVERY OTHER DAY IS HALLOWEEN. Do you have plans of releasing any of your shows on DVD?

COUNT GORE: I’ve had shows and compilations out since 1998!!! The Legacy series covers studio segments from my TV days without the movies. The Classics series has the public domain films I showed on TV with the local segments…..just like they appeared on TV, but without all the cheezy commercials. they are available from my web program or at conventions I attend.

ME: What made you leave your native Chicago for Washington, DC. According to Wikipedia you are living back in Chicago now…is this true? Are you a fan of Chicago horror host Svengoolie?

COUNT GORE: See, you can’t believe everything you see on the Internet. I’ve been back in the DC area since 2005. I did spend 10 year back in Chicago, which is where I grew up, But for me DC is really home. On a recent trip back to the Windy City, I did finally meet and have lunch with Svengoolie. What a great guy! He is one of the last and best major market TV horror hosts and I hope to have him on my show someday.

23692_386351534707_178849154707_3716664_5482943_n

ME: You have always been one of the most innovative of horror hosts…first to host NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD unedited, first to air in stereo, first to utilize the web…do you have any big plans for the future?

COUNT GORE: Actually the next “first” will be a show that is fully mobile compatible. As you know Apple products do not show video encoded with Flash. But, beginning on Step. 18, all of the video I produce for the web program…including the movies with be viewable on your iPod, iPhone, iPad, or any other iDevice Apple comes up with….and I do make some interesting guesses as to what they may be…as part of the movie showcase!

ME: You mentioned in your “Rue Morgue” piece (issue #103, August 2010) that back in the day horror hosts were territorial with each other. Did you have any contact with any of these hosts back then? Do you still find them to be territorial?

COUNT GORE: No, the only host from the “old” days that I actually met was the late Dr. Shock from Philly. Remember, it was very hard and expensive to move video tape around back then. Heck, it was only after the Internet came about that I finally saw some of Elvira’s shows! I guess in some ways we are all still a bit territorial when it comes to our work…no, I think protective is a better word.

8324_125590742581_754477581_2506378_7777238_n

ME: Do you watch any horror hosted shows?

COUNT GORE: From time to time I catch clips that are posted on various horror host forums. I really don’t have a lot of time to sit back and watch and enjoy movies. Besides being a horror host, I do have various other business interests that keep me very busy.

ME: You have had guests on your show but never a sidekick. Why didn’t you opt to have a sidekick like many of the hosts have?

COUNT GORE: When I was working on Washington TV, I was a union performer at a union station. The station wasn’t about to pay for a sidekick. So, I learned to work within that environment. We did have guests, but guests didn’t have to be paid. I’m still a member of the union and after 35+ years, doing a solo act is both natural and expected. That being said, however, I do have an annual sidekick in the form of the lovely Countess Von Stauffenberger, played by the talented author Eleanor Herman. Every New Year’s Eve she comes on the show for our annual date and every year the universe finds a new way from keep us from becoming….an item! My black heart gets broken again and again.

ME: Do you still feel that BEAST OF YUCCA FLATS is the worst movie ever made?

COUNT GORE: ABSOLUTELY!!!! Although I have seen a few new first time efforts that do give it a run for its money.

To show how popular horror hosts have been getting lately, you really only have to look at your newsstand these days. SCARY MONSTERS MAGAZINE regularly covers the horror host world and even recently HORRORHOUND MAGAZINE  and RUE MORGUE have jumped on the proverbial bandwagon (and of course, who can forget the amazing HorrorHound Weekend in Indianapolis this past March 26-28th that featured the largest horror host gathering ever attempted to date?). Luckily for us the horror host world is going strong and it doesn’t look like it will be letting up anytime soon! Lucky us!

At this point I really want to express my thanks to ALL of the horror hosts that contributed to this piece. Not only has their support of Count Gore DeVol be great but their support of this website has been overwhelming. Also, I am extremely thankful that Count Gore DeVol himself took the time to do the interview with me…he is a true gentleman and I really appreciate it!

Horror Host Memoriam: Barry Hobart’s Dr. Creep

th

Last Friday, the Horror Hosting world was rocked with the news that their beloved friend, and fellow host, Barry Hobart a.k.a. Dr. Creep had passed away. As neither of  The Daves had the privilege of meeting Dr. Creep nor had any familiarity with his show, we did not feel qualified to present our own tribute piece. Instead we felt it would be more appropriate to hear from his peers, as well as those whom had met and worked alongside him. Before his death we felt it unfortunate that we never me Mr. Hobart. After reading some of the amazing tributes below, it is even more regretful.

A GHASTLEE GHOUL: I still vividly remember watching the very first episode of Shock Theater with Dr. Creep. I was eight years old. My parents had gone to bed and I was flipping through the channels and adjusting the rabbit ears when this scary man appeared on the screen. Yes, Dr. Creep was SCARY for the first few episodes, with fangs and a more menacing countenance than the big teddy bear we all came to love. Up to that point, even at that young age, I’d fancied hosting a kid’s show like Captain Kangaroo when I grew up, but once I saw Creep I wanted to be THAT guy! Staying up to watch his show became a weekly ritual, and soon the good Doctor also began co-hosting the local afternoon kid’s show, Clubhouse 22. A horror host AND a kid’s show host! He was my hero.

It would be about nine years before we ever met in person. I was co-chairing a Jaycee’s haunted house and we went on Shock Theater to promote. By then the show had moved to Saturday afternoons and was being pre-recorded, after some wild debauchery during a couple of the live episodes! Even as a semi-jaded teen it was like going to the North Pole and meeting Santa. Anyone who ever met Barry knows his genuine kindness and sense of humor. You only had to meet him once to feel like he was a good friend.

He came out to our haunt that year for an appearance and was so much fun, going through the house several times with the crowds, his distinctive, infectious laugh carrying above the screams. We had a tape loop playing outside telling the story of the “legend” of the house, the old “man murders entire family forty years ago and may still be at large on the property” kind of thing. I was standing outside with Barry when he leaned over and asked, “Is that true?” What? Had Dr. Creep, purveyor of all things scary, fallen for some schtick I’d written?  That was Barry, a big kid at heart, and always on the hunt for a real ghost story. He gave us a great idea for a scene for the house that night too, which we built and surprised him with the following year. His eyes lit up when he saw his idea come to life.

Over the next nearly twenty years he appeared on my show many times, and I popped in on the New Shock Theatre revival that Andy Copp produced on public access. I called him my “Illegitimate Stepdaddy”. Barry took that a step further toward the heart and called me his son, which, in the horror host family sense, I suppose is true. What an honor and privilege! In 2002 he came on my show, bringing an attractive lady vampire named Suspira with him. He came in saying “Ho, ho, ho! I brought you something!” Little did anyone know at that time that the joke would carry over to real life. In 2003 Dr. Creep was my best man at our horror host wedding at Cleveland’s Cinema Wasteland convention, perhaps the greatest night of my life. Just one more way Barry changed the course of my life, as he did the lives of so many others.

bob_kathy_wed

Over the years we appeared at a lot of events and conventions together. Barry was never at all territorial or competitive with other hosts, he embraced us all as family. Barry loved people, and people loved him. On road trips and while at conventions and events he was always engrossing us with stories, some we had heard but never tired of, others that made you say, “Wow! Why haven’t I ever heard THAT one before?” A truly fascinating man with so many facets, beyond the makeup. He was a DJ on Voice of America, wrestled professionally, and was even an Elvis impersonator! Many times I’d be listening and flash back to that little kid watching that first episode of Shock Theater, and appreciate how fortunate I was to have this man in my life.

Barry’s kindness, humor, generosity made him much more than just a legendary horror host. He was the kind of person who affected everyone he met in some positive way, from his never-ending charitable work to the simple warmth of his handshake and smile; he made the world a brighter place. He will live on in the hearts and special memories of countless people. As I’m happy I never missed a chance to say: We love you, Barry.

BARON MONDO VON DOREN: Dr. Creep was an inspiration. One of the true greats of the glory days of horror hosting and a man who loved what he did and did it very well. Barry Hobart was a wonderful person. A friend who took time to offer a fledgling host advice and regale me with stories for hours as we sat together, talking and laughing at Cinema Wasteland. The world is a little dimmer for having lost them both.

Thanks,
Mike Ensley aka The Baron Mondo von Doren

BARON VON PORKCHOP: I would like to say some words about the late, great Berry Hobart a.k.a. Dr. Creep. I never had the honor of meeting this horror host legend, but through the things I have read, seen, and heard, I now wish I would have had the chance to sit down and chat with this fine gentleman. Being new to the world of horror hosting, I was introduced to Dr. Creep’s work through my Director Matthew Brassfield. Mr. Brassfield is a long time friend of Dr. Creep and had many stories to tell about the man Berry Hobart and the legend Dr. Creep. After showing me many episodes of Shock Theater and The New Shock Theater, I was hooked. The magnetism and charisma of Dr. Creep was enough to keep you watching for hours. Every episode was fun and entertaining, I found myself laughing out loud at some of his charming antics. His work has been a huge inspiration for me personally and for our show and from reading some of these other tributes, for many other horror hosts as well. Dr. Creep will be sorely missed, but his legend will live on through everyone he has inspired and helped through is charitable nature. My dearest condolences to his family and friends.

THE BONE JANGLER: It’s not often that I find myself speechless, as I tend to speak as if I’d just invented the mouth only moments ago. However, something happened on Friday, January 14th, that has left me both saddened, and disoriented. What happened was that my friend Barry Hobart passed away in a hospice at the age of 68.

Barry Hobart is a name that, perhaps, may not be familiar to you. Dr. Creep, on the other hand is a name that anyone who even remotely considers themself a Horror Host fan should, indeed, know quite well. Barry Hobart was inspired to create his beloved Dr. Creep persona by his uncle Doug Hobart’s “Dr. Traboh’s Chamber of Horrors” traveling spook-show. Dr. Creep made his debut on Saturday night, January 1st, 1972, on a Dayton, Ohio program known as “Shock Theater.” Instantly, Dr. Creep became a sensation, with many viewers, and “Shock Theater” became a destination point for countless fans. Barry had actually been supplying creepy voiceovers for another program, “Science Shock Theatre,” prior to this, but, it was as Dr. Creep that his legend began.

When I first became a Horror Host myself, back in September of 2001, I wanted to make a splashy entrance into the genre, and knew that it was necessary to do so at a popular genre venue. This venue was the infamous Cinema Wasteland convention. So, Nocturna & I made our way to NE Ohio. Held only a few short days after the 9/11 tragedy, the atmosphere at the hotel was thick, and a little uneasy. We’d arrived late Friday afternoon, and spent many hours in the hotel lounge, discussing our goals, and plans, before finally making our way into the actual convention ballroom. We were quite incognito, seeing as no one knew who we were, and, we were dressed as mortals, trying to blend into the woodwork, and get a feel for the layout, and the show itself. That night, we hung out until the wee hours with The Son Of Ghoul, and his crew members, Bob Ferguson, and Joe Cole. But, that’s another story for another time. This is about Dr. Creep.

On Saturday morning, The Bone Jangler, and Nocturna, made our way into the show. It took a while, as we were stopped every few inches of the way by people commenting on our appearance, etc. We were there to make ourselves known. We headed over to The Son Of Ghoul’s table, where we were serenaded by SOG. A few short moments later, Dr. Creep made his way to the table. Nocturna & I were instantly blown away by the man’s extraordinary kindness, and his ability to effortlessly make you feel as if you’d known each other for years. He was quite inquisitive, asking us who we were, and what our “angle” was. He had his seal of approval, just like that, and that meant, and always will mean, a lot to us. I mean, we’re talking about Dr. Creep, a legendary Horror Host with a tenure that few others could boast of. Dr. Creep, with that booming voice, and laugh, was in our corner. We couldn’t believe it. His seal of approval gave us goosebumps. That day was an important day for us, meeting not only The Son Of Ghoul, and Dr. Creep, but Dr. Creep’s “son” A. Ghastlee Ghoul. Many photos were taken that day, more than I can count, and, as we made our way back to Chicagoland that afternoon, we couldn’t stop talking about it, and, in particular, Dr. Creep’s overwhelming kindness.

Barry Hobart was an extremely generous man. He created the Project Smiles program, designed to help needy children, and his charitable work is unmatched by anyone in the Horror Host industry. Nocturna & I have many memories of both Barry, and Dr. Creep, happy memories. While we are deeply saddened by the loss of this extraordinary man, we celebrate his life, a life that touched countless numbers of people. Also, it’s clear that, while Barry Hobart may have passed over into the Elysian Fields, Dr. Creep can never die. Dr. Creep Lives!

drc-creep-lives

We love you, Barry! Thank you so very much for your kindness, and your graciousness, and for leading so many of us by your example.
- The Bone Jangler

BUTCH R. CLEAVER: Barry Hobart aka Dr. Creep was not only a horror host inspiration to me but someone I grew up watching every weekend. I distinctly remember a our “horror club”: kids in my first grade class that would get together each Monday to discuss what cool monster movie we saw on Dr. Creep’s Shock Theater. Dr. Creep was my first horror host and introduced me amazing creatures like Frankentein’s Monster, Dracula, The Green Slime and Godzilla and he turned me on to all those wonderful Amicus films.

I stumbled across the horror host underground in early 2002 and became pals with A. Ghastlee Ghoul, who resided in Creep’s hometown of Dayton Ohio (just an hour north of our home). Through Ghastlee I was able to meet Dr. Creep, my childhood tv friend of so many years. It was a fantastic honor to not only meet him as a fan, but over the years to become his friend and to get to know the man behind the moniker. Barry was immediately warm and welcoming, he was supportive of our work as he was with all hosts he met. He was so humble and grateful when we would discuss his past hosting and he would share so much knowledge and so many stories of not only hosting, but of dark shows and film production and the world of television in the 70s. I have so many fond memories of spending time chatting and hanging out with Barry and Ghastlee.

Dr. Creep always believed in us even when we doubted ourselves. One example that really stuck with me was when we all shared a table at the Cinema Wasteland convention in Cleveland, Ohio…during one of the slower periods we asked Dr. Creep if he would mind watching our meager stack of MCT videos while we ran to grab a bite to eat…he graciously agreed. When we returned one of our tapes was gone and Barry handed us 30.00. He said he chatted up one of the guests into buying one of our tapes and sold it for 25.00 more than we were asking. He told us to “believe in your abilities and never sell yourself or your work short.” It was an amazing gesture from someone I had long admired and I’ll always treasure that advice.

I feel very blessed to have had the opportunity to meet and befriend a childhood icon such as Dr. Creep. My deepest condolences go out to his family and friends. I take comfort in knowing he has touched so many lives during his time with us…and in the end that is one of the most amazing legacies one can leave.

CHUCK DeCLOWN:  It’s not everyone who gets the call to become a horror host. Hell, most of us never had the opportunity to grow up with one at all even. When the call came to me and I answered I decided to research those that had been before me and see wut the deal was. Dr. Creep and his antics on Shock Theater offered a great deal of inspiration for my own show and the work that I do. There have been many hosts and personalities, some better than others, and while his may not have been the greatest there was there is no denying that Dr. Creep was a strong influence on the entire horror host community overall. Our internets make the world a much smaller place, one where people who have never met can actually get close. Dr. Creep was one that I got close with. My sorrow is that I shall never be able to meet him nor thank him personally for his work and inspiration. My delight is, thanks to the internet, there will always be a memory of Dr Creep and his great work to share with us all forever. He will be missed.

COUNT GORE DE VOL: I’ve had the honor of spending a couple of weekends with the good Dr. Creep at Cinema Wasteland. At all times I found him to be a kind and generous person who thoroughly loved the art of horror hosting, as well as his fellow hosts. I will miss him.

COUNT GREGULA: Countess and I had the privilege to meet Dr. Creep at Cinema Wasteland in October of 2003. He vas very gracious and velcoming to us into the horror hosting community. Ve vere still new to the scene and not quite so familiar about other hosts outside of Chicagoland, yet he took the time to tell us of all the great people around the country including himself that have been hosting for years and their involvement in a group for horror hosts called the HHU (Horror Host Underground). I vill alvays remember him for his generous knowledge and DVD recommendation that led me to give hosting a try. R.I.P. Dr. Creep. You sure influenced many and vill be sorely missed by all.

???????????????????????????????

DR. GANGRENE: Dr Creep is the best. Suffice it to say he was one of the kindest, nicest men I’ve ever met. Always quick to think of others, always quick with a compliment, and boy did he have some stories – and that laugh… Hoo hoo ha ha ha. Priceless.

HALLOWEEN JACK: It pains me to talk about those sad days when the luminaries that we love and idolize so much, depart this world. Though, you feel somewhat detached when it’s someone you know only through their work and not personally. It still pains me, but I can’t say that I hate it. Until it’s under circumstances like these. When it hits close to home, then I hate it more than anything in this world.

It’s with a heavy heart that I talk about the passing of one of our own. A dear friend, a great, generous, kind person. Someone who inspired and paved the way for many horror hosts.

Yesterday we lost Barry Hobart, who we had come to know and love as the iconic horror host, Dr. Creep.

There has been and there is going to be much written about him on all the social networks. His accomplishments, his charitable work, his brilliance and his love for this business. And all deservedly so. Volumes can be written about the talent and generosity of this man. There isn’t much I am going to be able to add to that, so I want to draw from my own personal memories.

When I received the news of his passing, I flashed back on our first meeting. It was in 2001. A. Ghastlee Ghoul had been doing all night movie marathon’s at the Neon Theater in Ohio. One sad day, new owners had made a decision to turn the classic theater into a cinema, so the grand finale of the Ghastlee all-nighters was fast approaching. He put the call out to his fellow horror hosts, stating that if you ever wanted to attend one of these, now was the time. So Bago Bones and I packed up the car and off we went to the vast outback of the Sierra Umphweephwee region of Southwestern Ohio!

It was a grand experience meeting some of my fellow horror hosts for the first time, and friends such as Robin Hershey and Bob Ferguson, who were as much a part of the history of horror hosting in Ohio as the hosts themselves. The hosts in attendance were Dr. Gangrene, Curtis Prather – the producer of “The Spooky Movie,” the young – but old beyond his years Dr. Freak and of course, the legendary Dr. Creep.

As with many of the horror host icons I’ve had the pleasure to meet, I knew of Dr. Creep’s work through trading tapes with various friends over the years. When I heard he was arriving, I was excited, but nervous. I even found that I was trembling ever so slightly. After all, he was as much a legend to me as Zacherley or Vampira. In through the doors walked this larger than life presence, smiling, shaking hands, signing autographs. Everything a horror host should be. After introductions were made, he treated us to stories of his time on the air. He had this wonderful quality about him. He made you feel comfortable, as if you were old friends. And he was a master story teller.

As much as we didn’t want to break away from the campfire atmosphere, with Dr. Creep holding us all spellbound, it was show time! We were ushered into the theater and onstage where we were introduced to the audience and played a quick trivia game called “Stump the Hosts,” and stump us they did!  The questions that the audience asked were incredible. One for example, “what was Henry Spencer’s apartment number in the film Eraserhead?” Huh? We were bombing out big time. Finally someone asked “What serial killer was the film “Deranged” based on?” “Wait,” I thought to myself. I know this! I yelled out “Ed Gein!” Finally, one for the hosts. Then from his side of the stage, Dr. Creep walked over to me, grabbed me by the arm and said “Halloween Jack, you saved us!” Then came that booming laugh that I had heard so often on tape. Hearing it in person gave me chills and goose bumps. I felt that night was my passage, my acceptance, my ticket into the world of horror hosting.

Flash forward to a few months ago. Right after the 2010 Horror Hound weekend, I talked to Dr. Creep on the phone. He sounded wonderful and in good spirits. You never would have known that during that weekend he had an episode which put him in the hospital. He seemed to have pushed that out of his mind and gushed on about all the wonderful people and horror hosts he had met. Some, ever so briefly, but enough to make an impression on him. He sounded like a child who gets to meet their hero or childhood idol. I couldn’t help but think this was a little bit backwards. He was acting like they were the legends! But, that was the humble, generous nature of this sweet man. He adored everyone and was grateful for the love and respect he received in return.

As I am writing this, I find myself choked up and at a loss for words. Two things that normally don’t happen to me, but such was the impact of this man on my life.

My heartfelt condolences to Dr. Creep’s family and all his friends. He will be missed, but never forgotten. He will forever be in our hearts and will forever be a part of Horror Host History.

R.I.P. Dr. Creep.

KARLOS BORLOFF: I had met the good Doctor a few years ago at Cinema Wasteland. Such a great fellow and a legend that’ll never be forgotten. Hats off to Barry, his family & illegitimate son Bob Hinton (A. GHASTLEE GHOUL) for fighting the good fight for a long time.

MARLENA MIDNITE: I first ran across some of Dr. Creep’s material around 5 Years ago, his shows had an incredibly funny and easygoing style about them. I did not grow up watching Dr. Creep because I am not from his area, but have certainly seen a lot of his skits and several of his shows. When Robyn, Blake and I got to meet him this past November at HORORHOUND WEEKEND in Cincinatti it was truly an honor. He was not in the best of health but was certainly aware and glad to be there.

It was great to see how appreciated he was by the people who grew up watching him, perhaps the greatest gift a host can receive. He was incredibly kind to everyone and when we tried to buy some of his DVD’s that he was selling, he INSISTED on trading for DVD’s of our show. We were shocked and flattered. I guess we kind of had our own perception that a host who had spent many years on Television was sort of a different breed than hosts like Robyn and myself who have only been doing it for a couple years. But I don’t think he saw things that way, his love for the genre (“art form” if you will) over rides such minor distinctions that we were making. He was truly an incredible man and the people who grew up spending late nights with Dr. Creep are very lucky people indeed.

MIKE MURPHY (SON OF FROGGY):  I wish to thank A. Ghastlee Ghoul, Suspira, and Sue Cantrell for giving me the opportunity to learn who Dr. Creep really was. I didn’t grow up with him (he wasn’t on here in Michigan). I had never seen his show. At first he was just one of many new people I had met that worked in the genre. In October of 2005 I was invited to Troy Ohio to see him appear first at Around About Books (with A. Ghastlee Ghoul and Suspira), later as the guest of honor at a masquerade ball. Over the course of an afternoon I got to know him through the eyes and hearts of his fans. Each person I watched him interact with greeted him like a favorite uncle, and he responded in kind. The love I experienced there that day was wonderful. I listened to the conversations, and soon found out many of the fans came to see him not only for his work on television, but also for being touched in one way or another by the charity he co-founded (it makes me happy to think of how his face would light up when later we talked about Project Smiles). I feel blessed to have been able to spend that day with him, and for the time I had with him after. To me, Barry lives where all great people always are and always should be…….in the minds and hearts of those they touched, and those that love them.

MISS MISERY: “Dr. Creep will be forever in my heart, he is a huge inspiration and one Horror Host I have not had the pleasure of meeting. But from what I hear about him I know for a fact I could of learned a lot from him. He will be missed deeply.”  Reyna Young

MR. LOBO: It’s a deep hurt to lose your horror host. I lost my horror host, friend, and mentor, Bob Wilkins in 2009 and it still hurts. I wont pretend I knew Dr. Creep. I saw clips of the good doctor years ago via the makers of American Scary and he always seemed like a nice man and 100% professional. There are many more qualified than I to talk about him. His fans have approached me with great stories–THEY are the ones who will carry on his memory. Any more maudlin praise from Mr. Lobo would appear like I’m exploiting his passing for self-promotion. As entertainers we must be self aware and remember when the attention should not be on ourselves. Our hearts and attention should remain with Barry Hobbart’s fans, friends, and family.

PENNY DREADFUL: I will always regret that I never had the chance to meet Dr. Creep. I had always wanted to meet him but our paths never crossed. His show was wonderful and I thoroughly enjoyed his work. His loss is felt by all his fellow horror hosts. It is clear that he was both a beloved performer and a dear friend to those who knew him. Dr. Creep will live forever in the hearts and minds of his many fans.

RICH KOZ (SVENGOOLIE): Unfortunately, I never met Dr. Creep- but have read about him, and know that he was the inspiration for several horror hosts who used to watch him in Ohio. He obviously was a beloved host, and also a kind and generous man.Yet another member of our horror host legacy who will be missed.

???????????????????????????????

SALLY ZOMBIE: I’ve known Barry (aka Dr. Creep) for nearly ten years. Barry was very warm and kind to me. I loved sitting down with him for hours and just listen to his stories. He was fun to listen to. Barry’s life was was as rich and diverse as his talents. For many years, Barry played Dr. Creep in front of the camera. Dancing and playing and just have a grand old time. When Barry wasn’t in front of the camera, he was busy caring for hundreds of Ohio-area needy residents through “Project Smiles.”

Barry had a big heart and loved to help others when they had no one else to turn to. There was more to Dr. Creep than just a top hat and cap.

Dr. Creep brought joy to tons of fans across the country and he kept up going until he was too sick to perform. I spoke with Barry many times over the years and I always made sure I stayed in touch with him. I loved his conversations and the time I was able to send with him.

I was very lucky and honored to have such a good friend and I will miss him terribly. I wish I had more time to spend with Barry and I wish I was able to visit him more often but I am grateful for the time spent with him.

Goodbye, Dr. Creep. I love you and will miss you and I promise I will make sure no one forgets you.

SINISTER MINISTER: I had never met the good Dr., but have heard so many good things about him, I feel that I did…So, we at the Chap-Hell of Horror send our most sincere condolences to all family & friends of Dr. Creep…

THE GIANT RUBBER MONSTER MOVIE – GIANT FUN!!!

grmm051

Let me start by being totally honest. I had NO idea what to expect when I received my copy of THE GIANT RUBBER MONSTER MOVIE: SASCRATCH VERSUS AFRODESIOUS! Sure it’s a great title! Sure a lot of the people who are in it had a lot of great things to say about it. But could it really be THAT good?!? The answer? ABSOLUTELY!!!

I received my disc directly from Tom Berdinski, writer and director (you may also know him as Sascratch and creator of THE ITALIAN ZOMBIE MOVIE PARTS 1 and 2). I have always been a fan of giant rubber monster movies, especially those starring Godzilla and Gamera. I am also a huge horror host fan and always enjoy the skits they do between movie segments. This short film (clocking in at about 30 minutes) takes the fun of a late night giant monster movie and throws in some horror hosts in cameo roles, and creates a parody of the very movies these very same hosts show every week on their programs.

Some of the hosts with speaking roles include Roxsy Tyler, Sigmund Zoid, Marlena Midnite, Robyn Graves and Count and Countess Gregula. Other hosts, such as Count Gore De Vol and Dr. Gangrene make quick appearances on a video screen. The story is pretty basic…an evil alien, Dr. Sigmund Zoid, from the year 25,000,000 A.D., steals a time machine to return to modern times to destroy all of the world’s livestock using a monster called Afrodesious. Miko, a young stowaway who is constantly mistaken for an 8-year-old (he is actually 10) escapes the alien’s ship making his way to the planet’s surface to try to save the day.

Marlena Midnite and Robyn Graves reporting the events on the Midnite News Network.

Will he be able to save the day by using one of Zoid’s other monsters, Sascratch (played by Berdinski) to fight the evil Afrodesious (who really does have an afro!)? You will have to purchase this disc and find out! In fact, I highly recommend you going to THE GIANT RUBBER MONSTER MOVIE Facebook page and order it yourself (it’s only $5 is you go through Facebook)! If you are a fan of cheesy movies then you will not be disappointed!

Afrodesious on the attack!

What is great about this movie is that it never takes itself too seriously. The scenes are over the top and there are all kinds of sight gags to keep you entertained. One of my favorites features Robyn Graves, reporting on Afrodesious’ attack. Marlena asks her how big his proboscis is and Robyn acts all innocent saying “I’m not gonna look at it! You can’t make me!” Even though the effects are not Hollywood quality, they work on so many levels here, adding to the overall charm of the film.

 Amazing miniature effects!

It’s obvious that everyone involved had fun making this movie, and it shows. Maybe it is because I have met these hosts in person that makes me partial to this, but I really think most people, if they give it a chance, will enjoy this film just as much! It has the feel of a bunch of good friends who got together, had a great time and filmed the whole thing and this is what it really is about. Having fun.

Stars Thomas Berdinski, Brendan Bromley and Jeff Bromley.

For those of you who have seen, and enjoyed THE GIANT RUBBER MONSTER MOVIE, a feature length sequel is in the works with filming scheduled to begin in June!

Since the Daves entered the world of horror hosting, we have been impressed with the unique characters and personalities displayed in the public access realm. By taking a step away from their own shows and interacting with one another (via film projects such as this) they have not only created an opportunity to further develop their characters but have also discovered a refreshing alternative to public domain films. This also illustrates the positive outcome of horror hosts working in this medium to pull their resources and work more with each other. Recent projects such as THE HALLOWGREEN SPECIAL (featuring Dr. Gangrene & Penny Dreadful) as well as THE GIANT RUBBER MONSTER MOVIE show the results can be quite entertaining and have us Daves begging for more!

Dr. Gangrene’s “Horror Hootenanny” is a Halloween Spectacular!

By Dr. Gangrene…

The 8th annual Dr. Gangrene’s Horror Hootenanny was held Saturday October 8th 2011 at THE MUSE in Nashville, TN. This year’s event was a huge success, and a ton of fun. The Daves asked me to give a report on this year’s event, which I was happy to do!

299131_10150283864069280_800254279_7401624_5611304_n

The Horror Hootenanny originally began as a fundraiser for my show, Dr. Gangrene’s Creature Feature. At that time I was buying airtime from the local UPN station to air my program, and selling sponsor time to cover the cost. It was an ongoing struggle to sell ads and collect money, on top of shooting and producing a weekly show, and I was getting worn out, honestly. Jeano Roid from the Creeping Cruds came up with the idea of a “benefit” show featuring several bands to raise money to keep us on the air. It went over well, was a success with all the bands, and became an annual event everyone looked forward to. Over the years my show changed stations and I no longer needed to buy commercial space, so we switched the Hootenanny from a benefit show to an annual entertainment event and were able to start paying out of town bands more. All of which is a long-winded way of bringing you up to date on the hootenanny and what it’s all about.

Setting the stage for Dr. Gangrene’s annual Hootenanny!

hoot

I got to the Muse around 4pm and met Jeano there to start decorating. We strung Halloween lights throughout the place along with a full assortment or Halloween props: spider webs, a full sized skeleton, severed body parts, skulls, etc. I also set up a video projector this year and had horror trailers and movies playing throughout the event. I had a handful of posters from Rue Morgue Magazine that I hung around the place too. We finished decorating about an hour before doors opened. Boomer, drummer for the Creeping Cruds, and I drove and grabbed a quick bite to eat and got back before the doors opened. I made a quick costume change, put in my contacts, slapped on a little makeup and I was good to go.

yourhostThe Darker side of Gangrene…

For the Hootenanny and other music events (including when my own band plays) I don’t usually dress as Dr. Gangrene. The main reason is I like to keep everything separated, so I don’t get too burned out. It gives me a nice release from the Dr. Gangrene gig, and a different creative outlet. It’s fun to dress in different outlandish costumes and this year I decided to channel a combination of Alice Cooper and Screaming Jay Hawkins and went with a bit of a witchdoctor getup, including carrying a staff with a skull on the end that I named HANK (in tribute to Screaming Jay’s skull on a stick named Henry).

screamin_jay_hawkinsScreamin Jay Hawkins!

This year’s hoot was a Zombie themed event. We worked in conjunction with the Nashville Zombie walk and held the Hootenanny the same day. The walk was at 4 and the doors to the Hootenanny opened at 7. We added an extra band to this year’s lineup – making it a total of five bands. The first band to play was The Coffin Bangers. They’re a new band, so they haven’t quite refined their sound yet. But they have good energy and got the show started with a bang. Afterwards there was a bit of excitement as the sound guy disappeared and I later learned he’d gone to break up a fight in the parking lot. But we got him back and the show continued without too much interruption.

blk

Between each band I gave away prizes from my sponsors, which this year included Unholy Apparel, Rue Morgue Magazine, Scary Monsters Magazine, Evil Pumpkins, Wicked Witch Productions, Terra Fossil Wines, Lone Wolf Body Art, the Coffee Pirate, and Unkle Pigors. The way it worked was with every ticket sold at the door a person was given a raffle ticket they wrote their name on and dropped in a witch’s cauldron. Every time they bought something at the bar they also got a ticket. I randomly selected winners on stage before each band and handed out the goodies.

The second band to play was Alucard. These guys have been around for a couple of years now and they’re a really good band. A three piece vampire themed horror band, they always put on a good show. They’re a prolific band, as they’ve already put out something like 3 cds in 2 years, if I’m not mistaken.

We had a Zombie photo booth set up this year to document some of the creepy costumes. Almost everyone in attendance came in costume, as they got in for only $3 if they were dressed up. Lots of folks took advantage of the free Photo Booth and we got some terrific pics.

baseball-eye
Next up was our band, Spookhand. The crowd was really great by the time we went on and the room was full. The sound wasn’t quite as good as I’m used to there, as far as what I can hear onstage. But we played through it and honestly played one of our best sets ever, despite sound issues.  We played a trio of Misfits covers toward the end, which the crowd went nuts for: 138, Night of the Living Dead, and Brain Eaters. I incorporated a little shock rock antics to my set, and lopped off the hand of an unfortunate victim with a chainsaw, spraying blood into the audience. I then drank blood from his severed hand for my next song, I DRINK BLOOD. Good times.

Before the next band we crowned a zombie King and Queen and pulled them onstage to dance to the Prom Night theme. Was pretty silly, fun, and we had a special handmade trophy from Evil Pumpkins for the King and queen.

sailer

The Creeping Cruds played next and tore the place up. The crowd was at its largest at this point, and the Cruds scored extra points by coming out in drag and opening with the song SWEET TRANSVESTITE, which totally ROCKED! They were great as always and played several new tunes. A new Cruds CD may just be in the works soon, which is long overdue.

crudsThe Creeping Cruds!

cruds21

Before the next band we chose a Best Zombie, and gave out special prizes to the winner, including a $150 dollar gift certificate to Lone Wolf Body art in a custom made coffin from Wicked Witch Production, along with a handmade trophy from Evil Pumpkins. Sweet!!

DEAD DICK HAMMER finished out the night and let me tell you, these ghouls rock! If you ever get a chance to see them do yourself a favor and do so. Part punk, part rockabilly, part rock n roll, all evil! DDH is another three piece band from Kentucky, and the nicest bunch of ghouls you could ever hope to meet. They rocked the house and finished out the Hootenanny in style.

Everyone seemed to have a really great time and I’ve heard nothing but good reviews about the evening. We’re already planning next year’s event, and are working on bringing in 45 Grave if things work out right. They had hoped to play this year but are in the studio at the moment working on a new CD! We are even planning an event for this coming January too, as a year is just too long to wait between horror rock events. Nashville is a growing hub of horror rock, getting bigger all the time, and I aim to keep that trend growing!!

Terror from Beyond the Daves FINAL Horror Host Report!

Greetings, and welcome to the FINAL Horror Host Report featured on “Terror from Beyond the Daves.” Both of us Daves want to thank all the hosts who participated and, of course, everyone who’s faithfully tuned in to read it. It’s been an amazing 2 years but also a lot of work. We will always be grateful for it as it was instrumental in helping us win a Rondo and, even more importantly, forging friendships between us and many of those we featured. While certainly the “labor of love,” both David and I have been pretty busy with other facets of our lives and the hours it takes each week to put a single report together just isn’t there for us anymore. After several weeks of deep discussions, we decided it was time to call it a day. We debated keeping it going through the 1st of the year but, then again, what better finale then the last weekend before Halloween? To save space, our usual practice is to delete our reports after a few weeks but, for novelty’s sake, we will be leaving this one in our archives.

Other than the disappearance of the report, the site will continue going and always remain Horror Host friendly place. There are no plans to stop stalking our childhood horror host, Svengoolie, attending conventions, and partaking in horror host activities. In fact, I’ll be attending THREE of Svengoolie’s four appearances (not bad) this weekend alone. ANYONE who wants to share their pictures and narrative of events that we’re unable to attend are absolutely welcome to submit. Just shoot us a message at terrordaves@ymail.com and we can get that going.

Again, thanks to everyone who assisted us in this weekly post that no blog was ever really designed to support (WordPress, we apologize for all the times we swore at you on Thursday nights).  I guess it would be cliche’ for us to end with “Stay Scary,” so we will simply say, “See you at the next event!”

ELVIRA, Mistress of the Dark, is excited to announce a new series of Elvira comic books set to debut in 2013.  Working with author R.H. Stavis (“Daniel’s Veil,” Activision’s ” Transformers: War for Cybertron”) and artist Jeff Zarnow (“Godzilla, “68,” “Battle Beasts” ), the stories will focus on the Elvira’s MISS-adventures centered around a backstory about Halloween. The collaboration was teased to audiences at the recent “Stan Lee’s Comikaze” event in September in Los Angeles.   “Unlike a typical licensing deal, we are bringing together the power of the Elvira brand, a top-notch female writer and a rising artist to develop a new line of comic books independently,” says Cassandra Peterson aka Elvira, Mistress of the Dark. “We will then find a publishing/distribution partner that shares our vision to unleash these stories to the world.”

Well here’s the last report from the Dr….

This weeks show will be filmed at the s.w. libraries zombie homecoming. with video footage shot with classic host, Mr. Mephisto, at the Jerry Smith Pumpkin farm! Its sad news that the Daves are ending the weekly report but I understand the work that goes into it. keeping this going for as long as they did deserves all of our respect. with new hosts popping up all the time one does wonder if its getting a little mundane. I’m not knocking anyone out here but I do get the feeling hosting has become something anyone can do, and although they can, do they do it well??? I guess is doesn’t not matter…

Halloween is here!

Well, almost here.

Time for trick or treat and we have a real treat for you.

This coming weekend, on Movie Madness with Dr. Praxis, we will be featuring the movie, Horror Hotel starring Sir Christopher Lee.

On the recommendation of her professor (Christopher Lee), a young female student (Venetia Stevenson) travels to the fictional Massachusetts town of Whitewood to do
some research into witchcraft. She finds the town occupied by the reincarnation of an infamous witch (Patricia Jessel) burned at the stake in the 17th century; in order
to sustain her immortality, virgins must be sacrificed to her every year – and this year, the student has been the chosen victim.

This film has been compared to Psycho due to structural similarities. Both films begin by establishing an attractive blonde woman as the viewpoint character, leading
the audience to assume she will be the protagonist through the rest of the story. In both films, the blonde travels to a remote location and checks into a hotel or
motel run by an eccentric manager. In both cases, the audience’s expectations are shattered before the midpoint of the story when the blonde is abruptly stabbed to
death. In both films, the blond’s sibling is involved in the search for her; both films include a “shock” scene in which a corpse is revealed, and both films were
released in the same year (1960).

Horror Hotel for your Halloween viewing pleasure.

Plus, homages to two great programs from the past.  See if you can guess what programs…

All this and more will be available from Movie Madness with Dr. Praxis starting this weekend.

Get ready for Halloween and book a room at “Horror Hotel” starring Christoper Lee as shown on wwwmonstermovienight.com starring Bobby Gammonster – Internet Horror Host , Get on your black robes and lets all do some chants at Gargoyle Manor -the monster museum for some real trick or treating!!!

Look for an upcoming appearance of New England’s Hex-cellent Penny Dreadful at New England Comicsin New Bedford, MA!

Both her and the lovable Garou will then return to the same venue to help  judge a costume contest on Halloween Night!

It’s hard to believe, but it’s already THAT TIME… your friends at the MANOR are gearing up for their annual HALLOWEEN SPECIAL…

…but before WE can think about trick-or-treating, we’ve got a bit of a mess to clean up.

Remember when Zelnak sent us on a wild goose chase to the Crystal Rose Gallery (where we encountered the giant god Chuku, among other things)? Our shenanigans DID cause quite a bit of damage, and proprietor Jorge Rodriguez has finally caught up with us… to make up for the disaster we caused, we’ve got to work at the gallery for Halloween… and every exhibit has a story to tell… and every story is presented uncut and uncensored… will any of us make it out at all?

This is OUR Halloween… what about YOURS? We hope you’ll spend a couple of hours with us this weekend… after all, ’tis the season!

Meanwhile, the MANOR salutes KAT HORDERN and COREY JONES on the occasion of their marriage on Friday, October 26th… ceremony to be performed by… YOURS TRULY!

It’s an extra-special Halloween weekend… and it’s all yours at the MANOR!

STAY MAD Fright Fans!!

This week on “Nightmare Cinema (KTV 14), just in time for Halloween, “Encounter With The Unknown” (1973). Three eerie tales based on actual events are enacted in this film. First, three college students play a prank on a geeky classmate. Next, a ghoulish sound emanates from a mist-shrouded hole in the Earth near where a Missouri boy has lost his dog. Third, a senator returning home from a party finds a lost girl on a bridge. Narrated by Rod Serling. We have unearthed a fine seasonal cartoon in “The Headless Horseman” and we will have the appropriately titled chapter four of “The Green Hornet Strikes Again: ‘A Night of Terror,’” along with a handful of vintage TV ads. “Nightmare Cinema”: TV Old School! Welcome to The Vortexx, your home away from home for horror hosts, B-movies, and cult flicks! Our movies run 24/7 and the chat room is open at all times. Join us at 9 (ET) Monday-Wednesday and at 10 (ET) Thursday-Saturday for our featured movie(s) and a moderated chat. And be sure to check out this week’s Halloween specials, including an all-day Halloween marathon on Wednesday! Many of our hosts join us in the chat room on the night of their show, so this is your chance to meet the creative and talented folks who make these movies possible. You can find up-to-date information on our Facebook fan page http://www.facebook.com/pages/ARTV/138081346258078

Friday (10/26).  DEMENTED DRIVE-IN with Floyd Cadaverous presents THE WEREWOLF OF WASHINGTON  (1973). Starring Biff McGuire as the Nixonian president, Dean Stockwell as his ill-fated speech writer, Clifton James as the attorney general, and Michael Dunn as Dr. Kiss (a not-so-subtle reference to Dr. Henry Kissinger). Released in the midst of the Watergate scandal, this movie was hastily put together and frankly looks it, but these fine actors make the most out of their material and the werewolf make-up is actually pretty cool.

Saturday (10/27). 10:00 P.M. THE LATE DR LADY SHOW presents ASYLUM (1972) starring Peter Cushing, Herbert Lom, Britt Ekland, and Charlotte Rampling.  A young psychiatrist interviews four inmates in a mental asylum and hears four stories of murder, revenge, and the macabre. Written by Robert Bloch and directed by Hammer veteran Roy Ward Baker. Followed at Midnight by Chapter 6 of THE MONSTER AND THE APE on Saturday Night Serials with Mortimer Van Creep.

Monday (10/29). 9:00 P.M.  ALTERNATIVE REALITIES with Dr. Sigmund Zoid and Sluggo presents their Halloween special — WHITE ZOMBIE (1932) starring Bela Lugosi. Sure you’ve probably seen it before, but have you ever seen it in 3-D? Well, tonight is your chance! It’s the first zombie movie ever — and still arguably one of the best.

Tuesday (10/30). 9:00 P.M.  BORDELLO OF HORROR with Freakshow and Sin-D Vicious presents their Halloween special — THE GHOST (1963). Not just any ghost, mind you, but the ghost of Dr. Hitchcock of “Horrible Dr. Hitchcock” fame. Starring Barbara Steele as the doctor’s unfaithful wife and directed by Riccardo Freda, who had a great influence on both Mario Bava and Dario Argento. This movie has lots of atmosphere, lots of Babs, and a terrific twist ending, so don’t miss it!

Tuesday (10/30). 11:00 P.M. LENNY’S INFERNO starring MR. MEPHISTO presents THE MONSTER MAKER (1944) starring J. Carrol Naish, Glenn Strange, Ray “Crash” Corrigan, and Ace the Wonder Dog. A mad scientist injects his enemies with acromegaly virus, causing them to become hideously deformed. Albert Glasser, who composed the score for tonight’s movie for a fee of $250, would go on to score a staggering 170 movies between 1944-1962, as well as 300 television shows and 450 radio programs.

Wednesday (10/31). What better place to spend Halloween then at The Vortexx Halloween Marathon! We will be presenting an around-the-clock showing of the George Romero classic, NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD (1968), hosted by some of the finest horror hosts in the business, including Dr. Sigmund Zoid and Sluggo from Alternative Realities, Freakshow & Sin-D Vicious from Bordello of Horror, Floyd Cadaverous from Demented Drive-In, Sebastian Hexx & the gang from Frightmare Alley, PumpkinMan from  Fright Night Theater, Dr. David Lady from The Late Dr Lady Show, Riggor & Nyte from Riggor Mortiss Presents, and The Host from Screaming Horror Theater. This one is gonna be special, folks, so don’t miss it!

Thursday (11/1). 10:00 P.M. DEADGAR’S DARK COFFIN CLASSICS with Deadgar Winter, Cap’n Gray Skull, and Countess Kevorkian present ATOM AGE VAMPIRE (1963). A singer (Susanne Loret) is horribly disfigured in a car accident, and a mad scientist (Alberto Lupo) is determined to restore her beauty, regardless of how many women he must kill. For some unexplained reason, the scientist occasionally turns into a horrible reptile-faced creature.

2013 Horror Host Hall of Fame…a Downright Shame!

58511_10200895809102567_1199906188_n

Unlike the last few years, 2013’s March Horrorhound Weekend featured only a sparse number of horror hosts which, in many ways, seemed like a “last stand.” After the Vampira Tribute in 2010, Jason Hignite continued the Horrorhound Weekend/Horror Host tradition with a Zacherley Tribute in 2011 along with “inducting” at least ten horror hosts into the Ripley’s Believe it or Not, Horror Host Hall of Fame. The tradition of choosing ten random hosts for induction would continue in 2012 and, despite the lower turn-out, took place again this year.

1Halloween Jacqueline the Belle of the Horror Host Ball!

While the Vampira Tribute (covered HERE) was a fantastic experience that not only energized interest in horror hosting in general but also helped inspire the creation of this blog, things seemed to go downhill soon after….and this year I think it’s finally hit the bottom!

The majority of classic horror hosts were professional broadcasters who proved their versatility to TV stations by adopting their own characters and presenting packages of films. They often stole the show by being more entertaining than the movies themselves and amusing their young viewers via macabre humor and skits. Growing up at a time when monster movies weren’t so readily avaialble, this made them nothing short of gods and goddesses in our horror fan’s eyes. I’m not sure how to explain this phenomenon to those who didn’t grow up with one as you either understand this devotion or you don’t…though that doesn’t make it any less real for those of us who do.

People often tease me regarding my enthusiastic fandom of Svengoolie but my fervor is not unique amongst his nor any other classic horror host fan. I just happen to be more visible and have my own soapbox…not to mention the rare honor of having my host still operating on commercial TV today.

1
That being said, I am a staunch believer that the ONLY people who can properly “induct” or pay tribute to ANY horror host is their fans. I first became alarmed with this event in 2011 when one host induction speech featured something along the lines of, “I didn’t know who (the host) was, but I Googled him and he looked cool.” For the record, I wasn’t familiar with that horror host either but, never the less, it made a lasting impression and from that moment on I was mortified.

I started imagining a future induction ceremony where my host, Rich Koz’s Svengoolie, was being “honored” by some PA host from Schenectady who stands up and says, “I never heard of Svengoolie, but his YouTube clips sure look amazing!” This frightening image is followed by my hurling a chair at him; thus turning the entire induction ceremony into an episode of the Jerry Springer Show complete with make-up. I’m sorry folks, you just don’t go around messing with an adult monster kid’s childhood host!

Aside from that were mounting questions being muttered behind the scenes such as where exactly is this Horror Host Hall of Fame,  if it’s part of “Ripley’s Believe it or Not” what exactly is their contribution, why haven’t living hosts (unable to attend) inducted in past years STILL not been notified of their inductions, and when will those “temporary”  plaques given in previous ceremonies (in some cases misspelling the honorees name) be converted into actual statues as  promised during the 2011 show? Of course, that last question would not be an  issue this year as the plaques were dropped entirely in favor of a PowerPoint presentation. This was considered an acceptable alternative in lieu of none of the inductees being present.

Despite these unanswered questions, along with the growing concern that this year’s ceremony was much more of an afterthought as opposed to an anticipated event, my entire purpose for attending the Horrorhound Weekend in Cincinnati was to participate in it. You see, this was the year that my host would finally be inducted and, in keeping with my self-imposed destiny, I successfully campaigned to give the speech.

Some participants were told that the ceremony would take place on Saturday at 10am which was the earliest it had ever been. This immediately caused stress among many hosts by hindering their plans to party Friday night and made even more frustrating by the follow-up announcement that there’d be a “rehearsal” an hour before. All information at this point was spread via hosts and myself as we’d randomly bump into each other on Friday. Unfortunately, our horror host “Pony Express” was far from perfect as Dr. David Lady and Dr.Gangrene were under the impression it was still in the afternoon (as in previous years) and missed it entirely.

2With Larry Underwood a.k.a. Dr. Gangrene

The next morning I awoke at 7:30am and Brian went on-line and reported to me the negative comments he saw on FB regarding the lines at Horrorhound. I wasn’t surprised. While full of costumed monsters, the event itself was comparable to Godzilla! After eating a quick breakfast (which the hotel I stayed at provided), I headed over to the convention center. I wasn’t sure how I was going to get in there early as a long line had already formed but, thankfully, I was to be provided my own beacon via Halloween Jack and Halloween Jacqueline. Their customary bright orange costumes made finding horror host activities MUCH easier so I’d like to give a big THANKS to them.

261308_129429980577090_299528026_nShow me the way!

We teamed up and confidently walked past the line, entering the event via the front door (basically strolling with “purpose” prevented confused volunteers from stopping us) and found the ballroom where the induction was slated to take place. Inside was Jason Hignite along with Jamie Lee Cortese dressed in her signature Svengoolie attire. At least there’d be one person who’d appreciate my speech.

3A half-awake Dr. Destruction with Jamie Lee Cortese

The other hosts arrived on time save Dr. Destruction who, amid a fury of angry texts, eventually trudged in around ten. As it turned out, he was smarter than the rest of us as technical issues prevented the rehearsal entirely and we all sat around yawning up until show-time.

3Awaiting the ceremony with pals, Russ Wrangler & Brian Maze

At last the PowerPoint presentation was operating and we were finally ready to begin.  Prior to this, Jason quickly sought out a few people to induct hosts who didn’t have presenters.  This was to make up for absent hosts (like the aforementioned ones who weren’t updated on our start time) as well as others that simply weren’t filled prior to the occasion. It didn’t make much of a difference either way as, with the exception of Dr. Destruction (who was inducting ToLouse NoNeck), Halloween Jack/Jacqueline (Commander USA), A. Ghastlee Ghoul (I, Zombie), and myself…NOBODY had any clue who the hosts were they were honoring anyway. Even the Emmy Award winning, Fritz the Nite Owl, had his assistant tossing him last minute facts regarding Australia’s Deadly Earnest prior to hitting the stage.

7With Suspira and A. Ghastlee Ghoul!

It begs yet another question…who picked these inductees? I’m not suggesting that any of them didn’t deserve the honor but wouldn’t it make sense to have a fan make the pitch for his/her host and then agree to give the speech or send a pre-taped presentation? This is something that could have been worked out months before the event with very little effort. Instead it seemed to be more about choosing a host last minute and then seeing what costumed host was available to do the speech. I do understand wanting the stage to be more “colorful” but how about having knowledgeable fans pay tribute while having the hosts entertain the audience with skits in between?

As the show was about to begin, something seemed to be noticeably missing…like the audience! This wasn’t too shocking since an empty theater would be the natural consequence of having a show slated for 10am at a convention that opens at 11. It’s like going to a department store and seeing a large sign that reads, “BIG ONE HOUR BLOW-OUT SALE AT 8am! Doors open at 9!” The only real spectators outside of myself and the hosts themselves was my friend Russ and Jamie’s parents…all of which had to literally be rescued from the crowd since the convention volunteers had no clue what they were talking about when they said they wanted to attend the Horror Host Hall of Fame.

4Me with the bulk of the audience

Count Gore De Vol emceed the show and I was the first to go up there. Gore would later hurl a chicken at me which I should have stolen and had Svengoolie sign for me later. Actually, in lieu of the situation, Sven should be more compelled to stand up and whack me over the head with it. Other than standing in front of that aforementioned PowerPoint, I hope I did okay but, in the end,  my fears were still realized as my host and his fellow inductees were far from given the proper ceremony they deserved.

With zero audience, most of us tired, along with the overall lack of knowledge creating uninspired presentations we may as well have all just gone out to breakfast and toasted our hosts with a glass of orange juice.  There were a few warm moments that revolved around I, Zombie as well as a “behind the scenes” tribute to Uncle Lars (see my memories of him HERE) but despite these brief instances of integrity, its unlikely many felt a sense of satisfaction from this event nor that the newly inducted hosts should feel “honored” by it.

5Paying Tribute to Uncle Lars

If I appear overly negative, let me state that I get no pleasure from it. I literally wrestled for the past week on whether I should just write up a quickie/white-wash report or the truth as I see it. This is one of those times when I hate being the lone Terror Dave. Before I’d have sought David’s advice on matters such as these and, in this instance,  he’d probably of told me to put a cork in it! At the end of the day, however, I decided it was better for me to be authentic even if left standing alone.

Jason is a really nice guy and, personally, I really do like him. Contrary to what I’ve heard from others, I don’t believe he’s trying to create his own “horror host brand” nor does this for his own glorification. At the core, Jason is an adult Dr. Creep kid who really just wanted to share his fervor of horror hosts and, in doing so, provided both Terror Daves lots of fun & laughs over the years. I also know he’s shelled out a lot of his own money for these events while enduring flack from hosts who didn’t believe he was treating them fairly nor like the superstars a few deemed themselves to be. I also realize that he’s been ready to walk away from this event for months but wants someone else to take it over so it can continue.

So the purpose of my rant is not to chastise Jason but to say enough is enough. Just walk away quietly and please don’t bother passing the torch. Unless the convention, Ripley’s, or some philanthropist is willing to provide the ceremony with an actual budget while assembling a small group of enthusiasts to provide proper planning (preferably more than two weeks before the event), then it’s time to close the doors on this hypothetical Horror Host Hall of Fame once and for all. The inductees deserve better and the participating hosts could certainly come up with more entertaining things to do (plus get to sleep in!).

In fact, I’d like to see the hosts that attend these events gather on their own accord, choosing an event for which they can all commune and party, ala’ Cinema Wasteland from days of yore. As these are fun people and many are my friends, I really hope they won’t mind inviting an un-costumed civilian like me along too; sort of like a decisively less attractive Marilyn Munster.

As for the classic, commercial hosts, they’ll have their own devoted fans and archivists to see to it they’re given proper tribute and respect. If any of these fans should be reading this, I also encourage you to share your tributes on this site. No, it ain’t the Hall of Fame, but it will give outsiders a chance to learn what really made your host special to you (something a Google search can not provide) and why they’d belong in one…a real one!

Special thanks to Joel Sanderson for sharing photos and for videotaping the event in its entirety which you can watch below…

On Monday, March 30th we spent the day at the Nashville Zoo before walking the streets of the city like Rhinestone Cowboys. Neither of us is particularly keen on Country music so most of the local flavor was lost on us as we strolled right past the numerous amateur crooners (who seemed to be every twenty feet) in search of a prognosticating Elvis I found via Roadside America. Unfortunately, by the time we located the animatronic, fortune-telling “King of Rock n Roll” we discovered it was broken and had to settle for just a picture.

1

Later we visited Cooter’s Place a museum dedicated to the cult TV show, The Dukes of Hazard. Neither of us were big fans of the show back in the day but it gave us something to do until our meeting with Tennessee horror host, Dr. Gangrene.

2

Larry Underwood created the character back in 1999, having grown up a fan of Sir Cecil Creape (1971-1973). At the time, Underwood was working at a hospital and was often told he looked like Dr. Mark Green from the popular television show, ER. Underwood decided to capitalize on the resemblance and named his character “Dr. Gangrene.”

On July 1, 1999 Dr. Gangrene’s Chiller Cinema debuted on Nashville Public Access TV and, six years later, joined Nashville’s WB affiliate (later CW), WNAB. His show was popular and would go on to be nominated for several local Emmy’s as well as garnering two Rondo Hatton Awards. This year he was nominated for five more Rondos; one alongside us in the category of “Best Blog” (for which he would win and rightfully so). One of our favorite projects he partook in was a team up with New England hostess, Penny Dreadful, for the highly entertaining “Dreadful Hallowgreen Special” and. Underwood is also a regular contributor to Scary Monsters Magazine where he writes his own column.

I’d met Larry a couple of years ago at the 2013 Cincinnati Horrorhound Weekend. He also was a part of our weekly horror host reports back when we did those though his Tennessee locale made him somewhat elusive. Needless to say, we were delighted when he accepted our invitation to meet with him while passing through his neck of the horror host woods.

We met up with him at his house and he invited us in to look around. He proudly showed off his home office which was adorned with monsters and movie posters…in other words all the things that say “Home Sweet Home” to us Terror Daves.

A few moments later he brought us to one of his most prized possessions; a rare old poster of Sir Cecil Creape (Russ McCown) that he’d had framed. The poster was a gift from McCown’s family who felt that Underwood’s devout fandom of Sir Cecil made him the logical heir. Underwood says he knows of only one other in existence.

We also got a glimpse of a great replica of the PSYCHO house. It was donated to Underwood and used to serve as his make-believe dwelling during some of his shows. It was packed tightly in a closet so we only got a side view but it looked phenomenal.

We went out to dinner at a local Olive Garden where we discussed movies and his currently watching ALL the Vincent Price movies in order in preparation of an upcoming project. We talked about some of the more obscure ones such as Dragonwyck as well as his work with the beautiful Gene Tierney in Laura and Leave Her to Heaven.

When Larry asked what other sites we planned on seeing during our trip, we mentioned a ghost tour we were scheduled for the next day in Chattanooga which our waiter overheard before joining in the discussion. Apparently he has a grandmother who actually lives in Transylvania and he spoke of her numerous superstitions and various home methods she used to protect herself from the local monsters. You could tell he was being 100% serious and I wish I could go back and have gotten his contact information in the hopes of his elaborating further. That’s the problem with these vanguard road trips…you’re too tired to think of things until later on after you’ve had some rest.

We returned to Underwood’s home where he gave us T-Shirts and stacks of free shows. He’s friends with Svengoolie but doesn’t get MeTV so I promised to send him some of his shows by mail (we Daves should seriously start our own Svenflix Mail service). We also borrowed a prop for another upcoming stop on our trip. More on that next time!

We left his place and headed straight to Chattanooga where we’d be staying three nights. The next day would be one of our busiest of all as we’d be taking a side trip to Atlanta, GA to see their zoo…as well as a cannibalistic locale from The Walking Dead!

Coming Up…Finding Terminus!

“It’s Alive” with Flavor! Dinner at Aretha Frankenstein’s!

While we were dining with Dr. Gangrene in Nashville, we asked him if he knew of any cool places to visit in Chattanooga. “Well,” he said. “A friend of mine told me about a place called Aretha Frankenstein’s. I hear they’ve got great food and atmosphere.”

He’d had us with the word “Frankenstein.”

A couple days later we’d seek out this restaurant which was definitely off the beaten path. When we finally reached our destination, it appeared to be a residential home converted into a restaurant.

We walked up the stairs and went inside while some of the regulars sitting on the front porch looked at us as if we were every bit the “tourists” we were. It probably didn’t help that we started immediately taking pictures of the place…but if you saw how unique it was, you’d do the same! It was like a mixture of vintage horror and punk which reminded us of an old friend we’d once had in Kenosha, Wisconsin.

David: I thoroughly enjoyed the set up of this place, despite there being little reference to Dr. Frankenstein or his monster. One of my favorite things was the framed classic cereal boxes on the ceiling. They brought back many memories of Saturday morning cartoons, followed by a double dose of monster movies thanks to the Creature Double Feature. This is definitely a place where you can spend a lot o time just enjoying the décor.

Dave: I’d heard from one of the locals that the place had phenomenal omelets and pancakes so I decided to have breakfast for dinner. I ordered an omelet with a single pancake on the side (I can’t remember what David ordered). It would end up being the best meal I’d have during this entire trip! The omelet totally lived up to its reputation and that pancake was so thick it served as its own short stack. If you go to their website HERE you can even order the mix which I highly recommend even if just for the box!

David: When it comes to breakfast foods I rarely deviate from what I know and love. I opted with eggs over medium, toast and bacon. With the nice weather we decided to eat outside which was very relaxing in the quiet neighborhood and the food was really well prepared and tasted great. Believe it or not you truly can screw up something as basic as eggs, toast and bacon but this was not the case here. The guy serving the food was very friendly and seemed to genuinely enjoy talking to us about the restaurant and the area, which just added to our overall great experience.

We headed back to our hotel for our final night in Chattanooga. The next day we would be off for Gatlinburg which would prove that sometimes, no matter how well you plan something, you can still get some BIG surprises!

THE GIANT RUBBER MONSTER MOVIE – GIANT FUN!!!
